PGA Tour Working on Draft Program for Collegiate Golfer

A resident of Wyckoff, New Jersey, Brent Potter is an experienced information technology (IT) security professional who has served as vice president of vulnerability management with Morgan Stanley since 2000. When he isn't working to identify and protect at-risk software and hardware components, Brent Potter of Wyckoff enjoys watching golf.

The PGA Tour is the highest level of professional golf and, as opposed to other major professional sports leagues, player eligibility isn't determined by a draft. Instead, top amateur players who recently graduated from college are required to compete against their peers as well as veteran professionals in various levels of Qualifying School before earning their PGA Tour card. As it stands right now, 50 cards are available to be won each year through the Web.com Tour. However, according to Golfweek, PGA Tour executives are looking into the idea of developing a program to advance top collegiate golfers past the Web.com Tour and directly to the PGA Tour.

While nothing is official, talks between the PGA Tour and the Golf Coaches Association of America have been ongoing for several years. Under the proposed program, those who perform well in college could earn entry into tours and events operated under the PGA Tour umbrella rather than having to qualify through the Web.com Tour. Earlier this year, seven of the top female college golfers earned direct entry into the LPGA through its revamped Q-Series.
