After many years of debate, the Mayors’ Council had settled on a $7.5-billion plan for transit improvements in Metro Vancouver and were tasked with selling it to the public through a referendum vote. With digital work taking a central role in the campaign, Proximis was engaged to provide a suite of services including a digital engagement strategy, website development, advertising creation and placement, and social media management. Ultimately, the results were a wake-up call to transit supporters, with 62% of people voting to defeat the plan and many citing low confidence in the local transit authority as the reason. A setback to be sure, however, to those taking the long view, the work done in 2014 to raise the urgency of the transit issue may turn out to be the critical first step towards finding a transit solution that is capable of achieving broad public support.
