Tosca
The Royal Opera House Design competition
Costume design created for The Royal Opera House Design competition on the opera Tosca, commended by Royal Opera House judging panel for 'creative submission with strong design content, bird references to Tosca, great deal of movement and energy in designs'

Cut aluminium hand sewn onto leather
Tosca's character is very much dictated by her emotions, with her character flaw being extreme jealousy. The feathered collar acts as a physical reminder of how her emotions constrict her, yet ultimately she overcomes Scarpia's control with immense courage. The design is a metaphor for her personality; playing with the juxtaposition of using a feather shape to denote her fragility and the aluminium a heavy burden of her intense sensitivity.
Sketchbook work showing theme exploration and character analysis.
