La piñata

La piñata
The piñata

In Mexico there are many catholic festivities, especially on December. One of them we call it "Las posadas", which is a period from December 16 to 24 where anyone can organize a party. Just family or friends or all together eat, talk and break the piñata.
La piñata is made out of papier-maché and decorated with tissue paper. This piñata is special for "las posadas" because it's star-shaped with 7 peaks for the 7 sins.

The piñata is filled with tangerines, sugar cane and assorted candies. Somebody hangs the piñata in a rope, ties it to a roof or somewhere high and moves this rope to make the piñata difficult to hit (with the broomstick).
Someone is chosen to go and hit the piñata with his eyes covered with a bandana, then everybody gathers around to sing and wait for their turn or pick up the treats from the piñata.
