Bodoni was introduced in 1798 by the Italian designer Giambattista Bodoni. The characteristics of this Modern typeface feature a small x-height, long ascenders and descenders, elliptical counters, vertical stress and slightly narrow proportions. The extreme thick and thin quality of the form is also another important feature of the typeface, which was inspired by the preceding types, Didot and Baskerville. Similarly, the guillotine was also invented in the 1790s, by Joseph-Ignace Guillotin. Both the typeface and the guillotine possess a sharp visual quality and were both mainly used – for very different purposes – by, and for, high class aristocrats and royals.
