Interaction Between Two Forces

An earlier project dealing with abstraction titled “Interaction Between Two Forces”. The medium used was gouache paint on Fabriano paper and beside that, we were given complete artistic freedom with which to design and fulfill this artwork.
Due to the abstract nature of the parameters given, my approach to conceptualising this piece differed from my usual approach and it took longer than I would have expected to settle on a final theme and idea. In the end, I chose to tackle a very abstract force and feeling between two people and sought to depict their interaction stylistically in the form of emotion.
Initial designs favoured using colour strictly to tell the force interaction: warm against cool. At this point I had not decided exactly what emotions I would be depicting through this interaction, but rather just the nature of opposition through colour. Eventually I decided to add form to give structure to the emotions I was depicting and accentuate them with colour. This led to the final result of adding harsher colours to outline the forms of the “softer” colour and structure the emotional bond between them. Thus the cool blue, cold and hard, walled by a somewhat geometric black outline, holding rigidly onto a fluid, organic shape made up of an orange-yellow bordered with red.
