Zaza Local Games | ISTD

PROJECT BRIEF
The Olympic spirit of building communities through sport and other competitive activities is adopted in this project. A minimum of six diverse disciplines are selected to form the basis of a new local Olympics. The disciplines can be well-known or unheard of, as long as they connect to the geography, climate and traditions of the location (South Africa). The aim of this project is to bring people together through sport and to celebrate what makes South Africa, home. A format, strategy and branding that promotes the event to the wider world is developed.

DESIGN STRATEGY
The concept for the Zaza local games is inspired by the many initiatives currently operating in South Africa, that give the youth an opportunity to take part in and learn a new sport. The Zaza games are designed, not for the professional athletes, but rather the youth that take part in these initiatives. It will offer them a chance to train and then compete against other initiatives or teams in the same sporting discipline, giving them something to look forward to, set goals towards as well as teach them fitness skills. These games will also reflect positively on the surrounding communities as they will keep the youth away from the negative influences they often turn to, such as crime and drugs.

These games were given the name Zaza as ‘Zaza’ is a biblical name meaning ‘belonging to all’ and it has South Africa’s abbreviation (ZA) within it. The sporting disciplines included in these games are surfing, rugby, cricket, soccer, canoeing and cycling.
