"Salvaged"-Winner of the 2012 RISD Redesign Charette

Our project this year was the redesign of 204 Westminster Street, the home of Expose and 2nd  Life, two
RISD student-run organizations, to better serve their joint occupancy of this storefront. The two
organizations were our clients and the design problem is a real one with a budget of $25,000.

The design is based on the needs of the client, with an emphasis on adaptability to adapt the interior spaces for multiple programs and the versatility of some kind of storage system.  The group chose to design a modular system for storage and displays that were clean and simple, not overpowering the actual materials being bought or shown.  The wood for the modular system is recycled while the white color allowed for a complicated system to seem simple.  Another modular peice was the front reception desk, allowing it to be flush hidden and locked into the wall or if need be pulled out for a sales reception desk.  The wood floors are from also salvaged wood peices,  giving it the main accent of the space, reaffirming the purposes of both 2nd life and Expose.  The final peice of the design was good track lighting that was adjustable depending on whether there was an art opening or just a regular day of materials being sold in the 2nd life store.
