PROJECT DESCRIPTION
(1) Create a black and white composition which demonstrates the visual effect of Alternating
Figure Ground. Your design solution must be derived from an analysis of shapes from the
“tool” image provided to you. A minimum of three shapes derived from the original image
must be selected for exploration, but not all three need to be integrated into the final
unit form.
(2) Make use of a grid structure to assist in the placement, proportion, and
balanced distribution of positive and negative shapes in order to achieve the effect of
alternating figure/ground.

OBJECTIVES
•To explore the use of a grid in creating structural compositional unity within an alternating
figure/ground design.
•To become familiar with the visual characteristics that are instrumental in achieving a figure/ground relationship in a composition.
•To gain proficiency in translating your design from rough drawing to final digital
composition created in Illustrator.

I used the staple gun for my tool. This tool gave me a lot of curvy interesting lines to work with.
This pattern was created by moving each square at a different angle to create a pattern in the middle of the design. This was the more difficult pattern for me while creating it.
This pattern was created by a triangle clipping mask. It was difficult putting them together evenly.
This pattern was created by just putting each square next to each other repeatedly.
The end project.
