Artist-Teacher In School

During Wintersession 2013 I took a course called "Artist-Teacher In School." The course consisted of completing a five week internship with a local art teacher and participating in a seminar group at RISD.

For the internship, I was required to observe and assist the art teacher at my host school for two full days a week. I developed and taught a 40 minute micro-lesson to second graders, and created a project to leave behind in the classroom.

I was placed with an amazing teacher and RISD alumn, so I was able to learn a lot about what makes a good art class envrionment. I am interested in art education as a possibility in my future, and the classroom experiences and RISD seminar discussions were very valuable.
Teaching the micro-lesson
The following images are second grade student work from my 40 minute micro-lesson. The lesson was centered around Georges Seurrat, the famous pointilist painter. We talked about Seuratt and his work, reviewed the basics of color theory, discussed the basic theories behind pointillism and divisionism, related those theories to real world applications (woven textiles, pixillization) and finally worked from still life set ups to make original pointillist pieces.
This is my final process portfolio, containing all my journal entries, reading responses, case studies, and notes from the course.
