IT'S - VICE PROJECT

Research

I conducted research looking into who Vice are and as to who their competitors are including looking into other publications that have a similar layout as well as content. Vice use both a digital and printed format mostly focusing on art pieces, culture whether that be particular practices or social events. Also news and politics. They tend to stay up to date with current change especially when taking a look at politics in which they usually incorporate striking and powerful imagery in order to make a statement. Their main competitors are companies such as Oath, Buzzfeed and Mashable all only using a digital format as opposed to Vice's print and digital format mostly focusing on online media content such as blog posts, news and online video content. They also send newsletters out to anyone subscribed to them via email.

I took a look into how Vice chose to display their printed content and so had to look into a few other publications that look at similar topics and content but aren't necessarily a major competitor to Vice. These publications include Dazed And Confused, I-D and Brick Magazine. I took a look at some of their front covers and profile features. The type of look they chose, the way they retouched, time of day, studio or on location, Is it looking at a particular person, group or fixating on a certain area in the models personal life.
Here's just a few examples of what these media publications use for their front cover portraits. I've noticed that these magazines will never show the full picture or full body of the model on the front page it will be shot or cropped so that the models face/upper body fills the front page and there will then be a spread in which you will see the models body or a loser crop. I've noticed that the front covers are always on theme with the main headline or whatever they are promoting at the time as not to distract from the content but rather to compliment.

Plan

For the shoot I'll be using some bright colours, with a dark background the wardrobe being fairly minimal using a white off the shoulder top/dress or possibly some black jeans. The use of bright colours will come from pressed flowers used as makeup for the models face and collar bones. Any other makeup used will be subtle if any at all.

Props will include a block/stool to get different height levels within the shoot, pressed flowers and some live ones. The shoot is going to aim to promote a "one with nature" vibe which whilst the model may be environmentally conscious they aren't on that level which relates back to majority of the topic. Therefore portraying something the model is not.  I will be using a variety of studio lights and a grey backdrop a phase one camera and capture one to retouch the photos for the shoot.
