The Betta Seat | Hand Knotted Seat

THE BETTA SEAT
A stress-relieving Floor Seat

It was designed during the two-week International Open Elective Course, 'Yarn over the Needle' by Sarah A. Philemon, at the National Institute of Design. The course involved tremendous material and craft explorations, the outcome of which was a hand-knotted floor seat made using 'Hyperbolic Crochet'.
Generally, the traditional techniques of crochet enable two-dimensional surface developments. Through the project, the third dimension was added to the craft using Hyperbolic crochet.
The 'Betta' fish inspires the form of the seat. The textures and colour palette are reminiscent of the fighter fish.
The scale of the knots was increased using a thicker material, rope, and the use of wrists and fingers instead of needles to crochet.
The knots create a softly undulating surface with numerous pressure points which relieve stress. The seat supports the lumbar of the back as one leans against hard wall surfaces while sitting on the floor.
