For this project I was required to design and produce a bluetooth speaker that would fit along side the current Bang & Olufsen range, while at the same time embodying my personal design language and style. 

A spherical cement housing works in conjunction with two vertically opposed drivers to provide sound that is crystal clear without the presence of any standing waves or unwanted vibrations. 

Thanks to the use of two passive radiators, Onyx has the sound characteristics similar to that of a much bigger system and provides captivating bass that will appeal to the avid music listener.

A gyro frame allows the user to rotate Onyx 360 degrees in any direction, while using two knurled stainless steel nuts to lock it in place. All the inner components are mounted to a housing that places their weight at the centroid of the speaker. This provides near perfect balance and contributes to the overall rigidity of the unit.

A three part mould provided one half of the cement sphere. Three small round inserts produced a recess to place the volume controls, function / power, usb port and status LED.

Once the mould was prepared, it was cast with quick drying cement and left to cure. 

Once sufficiently cured this process was repeated for the other half of the sphere.

The next step was to sort out the inner components. 

Two 2200mAh lithium batteries power the unit and two 4ohm 5w drivers used in conjunction with two passive radiators provide the sound.

These components were all seated in 3D printed housings that I designed in solidworks.

I had the frame development plasma cut out of 2mm mild steel. 

I then made a bending jig in order to get the required curvature.

I joined the two cement halves using a cement adhesive, and filled the join using some of the same cement mix I used earlier on. 

I then fit all the components and sanded the cement using various grits until I was happy with the result.

The Onyx bluetooth speaker is a sealed unit that provides excellent sound quality for up to 15 hours.
