Toeing the Line stems from an exercise of pattern observation in the environment of our routine. The routine itself is a pattern and within it are many manifestations of patterns. In my own routine of walking to school, I noticed the motion of feet across the ground - and subsequently began observing the variations in this pattern. The outcome is a set of tiles that attempt to look at the ways of representing feet, which while having the same repetitive to and fro motion, have multiple different appearances that set them apart from each other. The exercise also led me to examine the representation of anatomy in art; how it has evolved over time; how a certain visual style attributes a certain sense of personality to the character - be it grotesque, comical, endearing or other.
The tiles have been laid out so as to from one cohesive artwork, although each tile can be viewed as a single piece of work itself. The intention of this project was to gauge how convincingly the personality of a character can be envisioned / defined  by only depicting one section of their anatomy.
