Noughts & Crosses
This book cover design was created for George Orwell’s novel Animal Farm as part of the Penguin Student Design Award 2018.
I based the design on the red stars of Communism, creating the animal characters out of stars, the rest of the colour scheme is made up of shades of grey, to indicate the bleak nature of the novel.
The layout of the animals on the front cover is also a nod to the hierarchy found in the novel itself, with the pig being the highest up because the pigs were the self-appointed leaders of the animals.
I also included a nod to the alcohol and drinking involved in the novel on the back cover, with two bottles spilling out alcohol that form the hills on which the animals stand.
I used a Russian themed font for the title and main text, based on the fact that Communism was strongly connected to the Soviet Union.
