Offer a Comprehensive Introduction to Design: Problem Solved
Based on the idea that highly productive environments are highly engaging learning environments, I secured printing and paper vendors to sponsor an actual printed project for an introductory course on design. This set the stage for a project-based lesson plan — and hands-on introduction — to basics in concept development, logo design, typography, layout, production specifications, file prep and offset printing. The class challenge: design a direct-mail campaign in support of an environmental cause (see featured student work below).
Such project-based lesson planning produces results all around:
• Work and solutions for real-world causes
• Inspiration and engagement in active learning
• Relationships between classroom and professional community
• Promotion and development of academic institution or department
