The Devil's Darning Needles // Artist's Book

Scarlet dragonflies were once believed to be darning needles used by the devil to sew shut the mouths of whining children, gossiping women, and obnoxiously loud/drunk men. Intrigued by this myth I created an edition of 10 identical artists books (closed measure 2.5"x5") that open into a three panel carousel book. I screen printed onto light blue pesce paper and wet media duralar to be sewn together into 2 concertinas (layers). Covers are also screen printed and wrapped onto bookboard.
Book laying with both covers flat.
When the two covers are tied together after unfolding, the book becomes a carousel book or sculptural object.
Here it is easier to see the way the dragonflies are printed in a transparent ink onto the wet duralar so that they float over the sewn together figures.
These are the two digital files that were printed as photo-positives before being exposed onto screens and printed.
