Paulownia Project At Philadelphia International Airport
These three carvings commemorate the Royal Paulownia trees that graced Logan Circle and remain as evidence of the beauty of the trees, while giving the wood new life - now as sculpture.
The form of the carvings was inspired by the geometry of Jacques Greber's Parkway Plan of 1919, and the theme of the three rivers - Delaware, Schuykill, and Wisssahickon - used by Alexander Stirling Calder for the Swann Memorial Fountain. Like the Calders, the Paulownia sculptures represent these three rivers.
