PHOTOGRAPHY II
Visual Perception and Composition
Week 7 | #oneperday18
Technique: Photography

Task: To play with scale and light to create an illusion through photography.

Process: Using my iPhone and iPad cameras, I took picutres of a large object appear small, a small object appear large, a light painting, a texture from nature and finally a man-made texture. Each photograph required a different angle, lighting, and distance in order to achieve the different effects. I had to use another camera for the light painting image, as my iPad and iPhone was not able to capture it.

Reflection: I think this image series was successful. I found it difficult to make something large appear small as the angle and the distance had to be well positioned. I also found it was difficult doing the light painting using and iPad or iPhone camera as you couldn't adjust the shutter speed. I tried installing an app on my phone but the images came out blury and not that great. I borrowed a camera and the image turned out really well. I think it is my favourite from this series. I enjoyed manipulating and changing the way objects appear just using photography, and it's a skill I will continue to use in my career.

Large to Small
The first image in this series tries to make something large, appear small. I took a photo of the city from my balcony to represent this. The buildings in the distance appear much smaller than their original size and some of the even look like doll's houses. The distance and height used to take the image was important as it allowed these building to appear smaller.
Small to Large
In the second image, we were tasked to make something small appear large. I used my friends key chain of a monster which is very small and took if from a zoomed in and slightly tilted upwards angle to make this object appear large and menacing. The use of light also helps to accentute the size and appearnce of the object.
Light Painting
The light painting is the third image in the series. I achieved this by using a digital cameraby adjusting the shutter speed and some sparklers. I had my housemate draw a picture, a smiley face and the camera captured the movement of light.
Texture from Nature
The texture from nature is the fourth image in the series. The texture I chose was tree bark. The bark on this tree in particular was quite interesting as it had many colours and textural elements to it. I took this photo very close to the tree to make sure all of the detail was captured.
Texture from Man-Made Material
The fifth photograph in this series captured a man-made material. Carpet was the focus in this case. The lighting and colour of this carpet helped to show the detail of the thread and the texture within the carpet.
