Poseidon rapes a young woman in the temple of Athena. Athena, enraged at the desecration of her temple, turns the woman into a monster. She is Medusa, and her rage is so great that anyone who gazes upon it turns to stone.

I didn't know of Medusa's origins as a rape victim until recently. This detail turned the myth upside-down. I wanted to depict her serene in the moments after her death, crowded with olive branches and visually decapitated by a Lenten rose-- a symbol of Athena.
