Think Recycle - The Recycling Feedback System

[ The Brief ]

This is a part of a two sectioned project the first part being a research report the second being this design task defined by that report. The need was found that a lack of knowledge was evident and that a way to incentivise recycling was needed.

The route I took was to look at both passive and active methods to increase both the quality amount recycled. This was achieved through an RFID tag system that works in conjunction with recycling centre and a bin.
[ The Product ]

The final outcome was made up from 4 parts- the sticker, the app, the points and the bin.

There are four simple and clear stickers which identify how this item should be recycled. This sticker also has an embedded RFID tag that contains material information that can be used at home with the app and at the recycling centre allowing them to clearly identify automatically how it should be recycled.

The think recycle app takes advantage of the built in NFC systems in smartphones in order to read the tags built into the product. This then receives the information about the product and using our database it can tell you what item it is and how it needs to be recycled.

When you use a think recycle bin you can also collect points built up when products are recycled correctly which gets you discounts at participating stores. This could also be used by employers to give bonuses or awards to those recycling most efficiently.

When you recycle at a think recycle bin you can get feedback on your recycling. With a flashing light on the bin indicating whether you recycled correctly or incorrectly. Giving intrinsic feedback directly to the user.
