A bowl and serving tray design created for 'Digital Fabrication' at the Rhode Island School of Design. The assignment was to create a piece that utilized both the hand and digital. The tray both supports the bowl and provides slots to hold utensils. The bowl was turned on a lathe while the tray was fabricated with a 3-Axis CNC router. The tray and bowl were modeled on Rhino3D before fabrication.
Rhino 3D model.
The tray was cut using a 3-Axis CNC Router. The piece has detail on both sides requiring a two sided cutting job. This process results in a thin layer of wood connecting the finished piece to billet. The above images picture the tray snapped out from the billet but the edges not yet planed smooth.
