Project Brief
Design a conceptual infographic for the United Nation's global issue: Violence Against Women. I created a two-part infographic consisting of a journal and companion exhibition.
Concept
This project is a conceptual infographic on a United Nations global issue. The issue is Violence Against Women and the UN's approach to improving violence against women is through awareness and education. Therefore, the solution to the conceptual infographic is a journal and a complimentary exhibition.
Process
My message and approach to this topic was: "women need to write their own stories." Through research I discovered that globally speaking, women experience different forms of violence across their lifetime. As I was working on the journals, I thought about how to address "awareness" of the topic. That is where the exhibition came into play and supports the U.N.'s stance on educating people about the global experience of women.
Solution
I created a nesting journals focused on these different age groups and the prevailing form of violence in that category. The journals are nesting because as a women grows older, those past experience are still carried within them, hidden inside. The journal allows women to write about their experiences, and the pages are torn out to represent how part of their life is taken away from them and missing.
Elevation Exterior
The torn pages are collected from women around the world and displayed in a circular exhibition space of concentric rings that represent the different age groups similar to the nesting journals. Visitors can walk around the space and read the stories of women's personal experiences with violence. At the very center of the exhibition is a small room displaying a nesting journal and infographic data for further information on the topic.
Elevation /  Interior
Each age group and form of violence is highlighted in the inner wall. The infographics on each section vary from percentages, to specific regions, and graphics depicting stats on how much certain violences occur.
For the journal covers, I added faces of women from each age group/category to connect more with audiences and add a personal element to the exhibition.
Reflection
I was astounded to learn that violence occurs to women across their lifetime. During this project, I learned a lot about how to take research on a large topic and layer statistics to find a unique approach. As well as research, I elevated the nesting journal idea by adding the exhibition, which ties my message together.
