The churches were carved out of the volcanic rock between the 7th and 13th centuries, and are a UNESCO World Heritage site. Ethiopia was one of the earliest areas of the world to adopt Christianity as a state religion (some time in the 4th century AD). This church is thought to have been built under the reign of Saint Gebre Mesqel Lalibela.
