Soft Gooey Centers is a series of twelve brooches dealing with secrecy and disclosure. Wearing the brooch in its most naked form, the wearer can present to the world a curious feminine object, seemingly without content beyond aesthetics. It is up to the wearer whether to disclose the real material of the piece and its taboo message: each brooch is a portion of a six inch pink dildo, encased in white resin and sliced into an innocent organic form. The wearer can share this sexual content and the taboos that it carries, or keep it secret under the guise of abstraction.
Just as femme and queer sexuality is censored, hidden away and maintained as secondary to straight male sexuality, the sexual content in these brooches can be kept secret in unsafe environments. In their own way, these brooches can politely nod and smile in response to unwanted sexual advances, presenting a non-threatening feminine face. Soft, pale, and supple, they present the facade that is asked of them. No one would suspect the threat implied by sawing a phallic symbol into twelve neat slices and wearing them as mounted trophy heads.
