Caffeina began as a resin coloring experiment; various amounts of brown dye were stirred into opaque resin which created a marbled, brown-to-cream skin effect. Upon casting her various parts, I began to imagine a girl who could camouflage into various spaces and had a “fluid” identity, as well as an unknown ethnicity. Her color scheme spoke to me of earth, growth, and the richness of nature. I imagine her as a hard worker in a rare moment of rest. Although she is a confident and beautiful spirit, I didn’t want to idealize or distract from the realities of the coffee and farming industry; therefore the face behind her represents the dark side of child labor that is ever-present. Caffeina’s body is adorned with real coffee beans, painted gold and coated in resin.
