Project Title: Bridgeport Market Complex
Project Description: The Bridgeport market complex will provide a technologically advanced complex that meets the food consumption needs of the neighborhood and provides the services that support the subsidiary activities envisioned by the Bridgeport master plan. The synergies created by the co-location of a farm, market and research facility will help create a center where food is grown, distributed and studied respectively.
While markets come in different shapes, sizes and configurations all over the world, it is critical that the Bridgeport market generates and incorporates the latest knowledge on food research to affect various aspects of the food cycle, contributing to the entire neighborhood, city and beyond.
The complex is intended to be used by shoppers, residents, researchers, urban farmers, staff, and the larger public, and is meant to be equally accessible and a generous qualitative space for all. The location for the building is at the intersection of Loomis Street and the Chicago river in the Bridgeport neighborhood of the city. In the Bridgeport master plan, it is the second node between the recreational and educational complexes.
It occupies a position of significance in the master plan, serving as a center for multiple activities and transportation routes. Smaller plots along Loomis street will reflect and support the different functions of the market complex, such as family-owned restaurants, local artisan shops, and research staff residences and dormitories.
