Dismantling the White Cube
Exhibition Space Design
A work of art that is housed in a museum can only be seen by physically visiting the museum, hoping it is on display and often coping with crowds to actually get a good view of the piece. Art is not meant to be privatized, it is meant to convey the idea of the artist to as large an audience as possible. Art in public places should be considered as part of a much wider set of issues connecting planning, landscape and the environment. Instead of restraining it within limited, rarefied cultural spaces, it needs to be integrated into the everyday commercial experience of a person and the mall is a perfect space for such integration. Furthermore, there is a need to break out of the conformed white cube in which art is displayed. By dismantling the white cube, the design of this exhibition space reflects the fluidity between commerce and culture in this mall space.
