The purpose of this project was to take extraordinary pictures of ordinary objects and create a book cover using the most effective image. It was important to create a juxtaposition of ideas. For example, who would have ever thought to burn a crayon and put it on the cover of Fahrenheit 451?

My first photoshoot left me with some fun ideas, but they all turned out too literal. Crayons are childish and I was pairing them with other childish things, such as googly eyes and balloons.

My second photoshoot was much better. I got out of the box (literally) and started burning, melting, soaking, and smashing crayons. Once I juxtaposed the childish innocence of crayons into a different situation, magic happened.

My initial ideas for the cover were, again, too inside the box.

After working at it for a while, I finally got some that I liked.

Why did I choose Fahrenheit 451? In the book, the culture they live in is a fake innocence. But none of them realize how fake it is until it's too late. Until everything is burnt.
