Techniques: Editing, Voice-Over, Color Grading, Story Telling
In the video “Perspective Change”, I was not present when the footage was shot. It was a very difficult task for me since I was stuck with the footage that was already recorded and I had to make a story out of it.
My friend who shot the video was a novice, so lacking knowledge on proper lighting, he had shot in different lighting, making the colors uneven and unbalanced. Because the sound was not captured by an external mic, the soundscape was distorted and noisy. The same scene was shot in different angles thus including a lot of repeated scenes that made the footage appear long.
I had to somehow come up with a story line with 3 different scenes and multiple angles (which is not bad), balance the color by heavily color correcting the footage, find the perfect song that would go with the message of the video and make a script for the voiceover.
I took this as a challenge and an opportunity to really put my editing skills to a test. Although this was a daunting task and I did get stuck in a couple of areas where only a particular technique would work, making it very time consuming, but this turned out to be a blessing in disguise for me since I was able to learn to work with limitations.
This is a skill I need to get used to, so in the future, the insane demands and ludicrous requests in the future shouldn't be a challenge. At the end of it all, I came up with a script, storyline, soundscape, and a timeline. My main objective in this project was to make it look like nothing special was done in the final rendered video because I believe the best effects are the ones that aren’t noticeable.
