TYPOGRAPHY MODULE
"WHIMSY WALL" DECORATIVE FONT
For my Level 3 Graphic Design diploma typography module we were asked to create a decorative font based upon the theme of London. I was required to base my decorative font from a specific sub-theme of my choosing, from which I chose "Modern and Archaic". This was inspired by my own enjoyment of walking around some of the cosier and archaic places in my local area of London.
The shape of the letters is inspired by geometric, modernist typography, having a curved design which suggests the sleek designs of new buildings in the city. In contrast, a brick pattern is wrapped around each letter to mimic the use of brickwork in older buildings in the city. It also gives each letter a suggestion of 3D form which makes their design more visually appealing. Finally, dots of different shades fill the “underside” of these curved areas. These would be filled in a different set of colours for each of the letters, and acts to represent the kind of joy that one can experience whilst walking around the city.
The aesthetic of this font, entitled, "Whimsy Wall" is therefore representative of London’s varied identity and appeal.
