a campaign chair
in steel, maple, brass and canvas

the process
generating some concepts
started with sketches that explore what a soft chair could look like
what bigger ideas it could convey
to justify what it does and why it does it
working on keys ideas/overarching concepts
which determine the joinery, the details and general form:
+ raw
+ intertwining
+ easy assembly
some of the details being worked out
Notice how the proportion of the chair changes through every stage
to result in harmony
it's a very graphic and precise way of compositioning.

because of the complexity in joinery, the chair requires precise made parts
Notice that the proportion has come to a conclusion
machining slots
machining thin wall steel and maple took some extra care in the way the materials behave
a 3/8 end mill was used throughout for how it matches the fillet of the extruded steel bar stock
finishing passes
involves filing the slots for a slip fit
[checking the fit was very important]
and chamfers for softened edges
adding hole features for fasteners
drilling through the maple and steel bars
blind welding 10-32 nuts to the backrest piece
canvas pieces being sewn
edges being hemmed
ready to be assembled

truly an industrial campaign chair
intertwining
every decision of joinery and detail is
to show off how the pieces come together
overlapping each other
whether partially or entirely
rawness
celebrates how the structural elements were manufactured
as stock
minimal material manipulation
comes to show that the sum is greater than all its parts
a twist for the campaign chair

through a new lens
