We began our project by thinking about office spaces and all that they represent. One reaction we commonly heard was that office spaces sometimes end up becoming more “professional” fraternity houses. We were interested in the expectation visually and otherwise that occur within office spaces and in the new emergence of “fun” or “playful” installations in tech offices like Google and Amazon.

Our installation was meant to address the office space in a wide variety of ways. In one perspective, we hoped to reveal the labor (by humans and machines) that goes on behind the work and to make the surfaces of office objects more reflective of their functions. By creating decorative chaos, we also hoped to dominate the modernist, often male-dominated, and outdated roles and designs of office spaces.

Using a variety of techniques and by mixing the digital and the physical, we created this installation, a calendar, and a series of professional office photos.  In making the piece, we used rhino and photoshop, then created the same techniques manually in the installation space.

In the end we learned a lot about taking leadership roles and learning to communicate better with each other, which can sometimes be even more difficult when it occurs between good friends.

We were delighted by the installation in the end, and interested in what a fuller scale realization might look like. Our use of multiple technological levels could be further elevated with greater funding and time.
