“The goal of this treasure hunt is to introduce you and the participants to parts of your city that they may have previously overlooked. No destination would generally be visited by a tourist, each spot has likely been appreciated briefly, but widely ignored. In the spots that I’ve provided to you I’ve been struck by a delight in the mundane and have made a few lovely memories. I hope that you and your participants will too.”

I’m interested in creating projects for social engagement that motivate others to explore and consider subjects or spaces in a different way. Participating in scavenger hunts allows for the types of observation and dialogue that I wanted to highlight for this project. Participants and organizers of scavenger hunts are encouraged to perceive the surrounding world in a completely different light than the average person.

This is another project in which I used playful, colorful visual language, which seemed to be fitting considering the theme of scavenger hunt and the quick taste of summer weather. I’ve been trying to define my style, so in this unit I played with illustration and color in a way that I hadn’t before.

I also became very interested in the idea of a package. In this case, the package held an event, I’m interested in expanding on that idea–and the many other directions packaging can take–in the future.

Letter 1 of 2 to Scavenger Hunt Leader

Dear ____,
You have been chosen to host a scavenger hunt. I’ve included everything you need to make it happen, but it is up to you to make the event occur. You will organize the event by choosing the participants, properly hiding the clues, and selecting the treasure. This is not an easy package. It is a package that will take you places, that will demand your time, and that will require that you take leaps and make good guesses. There is no guarantee that you or your chosen participants will finish the scavenger hunt successfully, but if you do you will surely learn something about exploring and noticing things.
The goal of this treasure hunt is to introduce you and the participants to parts of your city that they may have previously overlooked. No destination would generally be visited by a tourist, each spot has likely been appreciated briefly, but widely ignored. In the spots that I’ve provided to you I’ve been struck by a delight in the mundane and have made a few lovely memories. I hope that you and your participants will too. However, you are more than welcome to alter or add additional locations. Please encourage all of your participants to share documentation and reflection on their time participating in the scavenger hunt. If possible, be sure to leave hints with nearby stops or restaurants. If you need help, I am available for guidance.

All the best,
Raina Wellman

Letter 2 of 2 to Scavenger Hunt Particiapnt

Dear _____,
You have been selected as a participant in this scavenger hunt. The goal of this treasure hunt is to introduce you to parts of your city that you may have previously overlooked. No destination would generally be visited by a tourist, each spot has likely been appreciated briefly, but widely ignored. When you have completed the hunt, please share documentation and reflection. Each package that you find will contain a hint that should guide you to the final destination and treasure. The written hint will be encased in a design that references the current destination, the inner lining will provide a clue that may help to guide you to the next destination and which will be wrapped around the next written hint (and so on). Do not be afraid to ask for help from those around you. You can reach a 24-hour helpline at [cellphone number here:]. Ask questions via text (or in situations of great doubt call), answers will be as prompt as possible. Scavenger hunts are a delightful way to spend time together and to explore. Hopefully, this treasure hunt will make you look at your surroundings in a different way. Please make use of those around you and take a look at the map that is provided. If you are interested, you can learn more about scavenger hunts in the provided booklet.

All the best,
Your Scavenger Hunt Leader
