Immigration Metaphors Emergency Kits

This project is a three-part satirical set of emergency kits containing protective gear to combat different metaphors connected to immigrants. The intention of this project is to present the negative ways in which metaphor is used to describe immigrants and undocumented people. The metaphors used are: Immigrants as invaders/aliens, immigration as a wave/flood, and immigration as an infestation/vermin. The use of this language is common in our daily discourse, but it is not criticized, creating negative associations with immigrants. In the current climate of immigration reforms, and the rising rate of deportations, this language must be questioned.

The brief for this project was to consider design authorship, develop a physical project on our areas of interest and to apply it to design for social change. My main challenge was to create work that was relevant and important. The intention of this project is to present negative ways in which metaphor is used to describe immigrants, our friends, and family members.
