HOW TO BEAT BIAS

Algorithms are pure math. A decision process in the form of a code. A series of experiences are used as inputs. When exposed to a situation or a problem they react in a certain way producing an output. In that sense, algorithms are just like us. We make decisions everyday based on our observations and interpretations, influenced by our interactions and experiences. Even though we don’t realize it, we feed technology with data. And that data helps technology shape the decisions it makes and the actions it takes. That’s the paradigm of our artificial intelligent world: we are biased algorithms, teaching and creating biased algorithms. Algorithms are just numerical representation of who we are as a society.

Trying to shift the conversation from the binary mindset where there is only room for victims and perpetrators, <BIAS> IN <BIAS> OUT wants to raise awareness to an urgent issue: we have responsibility on the consequences of our bias that are now embedded in machines. The more we learn how to teach them, the better will be the co-creation of the world. If the algorithm is a mirror, we have to take action on what we are reflecting.

About the Project

I recently joined a session with Mesa.do, an initiative built on the power of doing. Selected professionals with different skills and experiences come together to conceive, develop, and prototype solutions in a short period of 5-6 days. The process was about sharing, discussing, and making it happen. I learned the most from the "sprint" portion, and thought about how we might apply this very rich process with powerful delivery to Interbrand’s own methodology.

I also led the development of the visual identity for the project, which encourages society to discuss the dangers of racist and biased algorithms. Led by Dutch designer and data-researcher, Rogier Klomp, we worked together to explore, question, and demonstrate why everyone should be involved in the discussion of how to beat biases in the algorithms that are at the heart of our technology.
