Food and cigarette package design from the past to present was researched for the Thesis project. The problem of today’s packaging design compared to past packaging design was analyzed and one poster and print publication was published. Today’s society has a tendency to overemphasize the latest social trends, such as popular styles or growing social issues, in design practices. For instance, a lot of commercial packaging displays many health phrases in order to attract health-conscious consumers. The design may appeal to the specific consumer, but consequently it also diminishes visual-artistic creativity and effectiveness in design. Good design should effectively deliver clear messages to people without using too many descriptions and change people’s perception. Packaging design is not an exception. Since products and consumers communicate mainly based on what is on the packaging, designers should reflect effective solutions as well as the common concerns without using too many words. Design should show, not tell.
