During my junior year in college I wrote a $3500 dollar grant that funded research for creating small shelters for homeless individuals. As a second part of this grant, and for my capstone project I chose to redesign the local homeless shelter in Flagstaff, Arizona where these small shelters would sit. Homelessness is an important issue that can and should be solved.
Exterior rendering of Sunshine Rescue Mission. Small shelters can be seen on property of homeless shelter. These are to help bring in more individuals off the streets when overcrowding is an issue. Hydroponic farming stations can also be seen on the property of the homeless shelter. Hydroponic farming will be used to prepare national meals at the shelter, while also selling produce to local community members.
Rendering of classroom. Classrooms were designed to be more modular in order to have multi use spaces. This allows for different activities to take place while also being cost effective. The homeless shelter has a woodworking department, so multi functional furniture was designed that individuals working in this department can learn to build.
Rendering of gathering area at homeless shelter. The homeless shelter is a faith based organization. Having a spiritual gathering area where people can connect with one another was crucial for the homeless shelter.
Rendering of hydroponic farm room. In order to bring in more funded for the homeless shelter a hydroponic farming room will be implemented. The individuals running the hydroponic department will work to sell produce at Flagstaff's farmers market. The homeless shelter has a commercial kitchen onsite, individuals working in the cooking department will use produce from the hydroponic farm to prepare nutritional meals for the homeless shelter.
