Crossroads & Peripheries

CROSSROADS & PERIPHERIES

"Crossroads & Peripheries" is a zine that explores the ephemeral nature of folk art environments. It reflects on the status of outsider environments as "peripheries" and searches for the intersection between mainstream society and the often marginalized members of the folk art community. The layout of the zine is frequently altered to mimic the heterogeneous nature of folk art environments and text relating to folk art environments is relegated to footnotes to indicate their status as peripheries. A quote from The Lure of the Local runs throughout the zine and maintains hierarchy above informative text to symbolize the precedence of academia over self-taught artists. The book ends by suggesting that the peripheries have the power to overcome the barriers of their adversaries.

Text was gathered from Lucy Lippard's The Lure of the Local and Jay Lawrence Platt's, "Fixing Dreams: Preserving American Folk Art Environments."  Images used belong to SPACES, a 501C organization dedicated to the preservation of folk art environments. The zine was printed on 80g Maestro Salmon Paper, with type set in Big Caslon and Suisse Int'l.
