William Morris Manifesto

SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION OF ANCIENT BUILDINGS, 1877
WILLIAM MORRIS AND PHILIP WEBB

Project:
Engage with a manifesto to present in a new way relating to the core message it is trying to communicate and to its author.
I wanted to focus on the arts and craftsmanship movement that William Morris was a key leader of and the idea that this manifesto focusses on protection of buildings without fixing them in order to make them better for a 21st century society.
The cover is made out of letterforms designed from patterns/prints from the Kelmscott Press an invention by William Morris. I wanted to capture an intriguing contradiction of an ornate pattern containing quite plain and legible type design. Repeating the pattern incorporates an idea of intense detail and craftsmanship.
Running the manifesto over the concertina booklet form presents a long manifesto in a more playful way. I decided on red paper to echo the red bricks of his home at the museum of William Morris.
