For this series, my focus was on emotional movement as translated into physical movement. These illustrations started as many figures scribbled in marker on computer paper at my kitchen table. I drew people squeezing themselves into oblivion, opening themselves up to reveal an entire galaxy inside, tingling with anger represented by congealing dots, with mind-trap bars coming out of their heads and encircling them, ripping open their chests to let out an explosive pain, bashing their heads against the wall. Although physically impossible, these exaggerated poses represent mental states externalized from the mind to the body.
The series was displayed as part of a gallery show about movement, in conjunction with AS220’s Modern Movements Dance Festival. There are currently four finished illustrations, but I’d like to expand this series to include the rest of the ideas.
