The Creature | Floor Lamp

The Creature

The Creature is an award winning metal floor lamp celebrating the beauty of light, shadow and geometry. The objective of the project is to design a floor lamp that not only provides illumination to the user, but also can become an aesthetic piece.
Inspirations

For this design, I took inspirations from various robot concepts and futuristic machine life forms. The lean forms, long, pointy appendages, and the flat, metal surfaces caught my attention, but what really attracted me to them was how these mechanical parts come together to create a life-like creature with character.

I also took inspirations form origami and low poly forms. This interested me as it provides a way to build complex 3D structures with very simple 2D shapes, and at the same time compliments the characteristics of both machines and creatures.

The Perforated Edges

The early design features direct bending of the sheet metal. It was later discovered that it was very difficult to make many of the bends. The head and the body of the lamp needs bends toward the center at various angles.

So instead of bending the full length of the metal, perforations were added to decrease the surface area being folded to several 1/4in wide tabs. This allows these folds be done by hand. This means the bends are cleaner, the bends could be made faster and much easier, while complimenting the overall design aesthetic of the floor lamp.
