Lapis

Lapis is a 2 week Long project which aims to give touch and go food eaters a streamline seating experience, where they can do without a table, and still be able to linger around to soak in the ambiance. Lapis features multiple subtle features such as a bag holder, arm rest, tray to either hold magazines or place dustbins and most importantly, a seat that follows the contour of the users. The name, Lapis, is inspired by the many functions of this bench, just like a thousand layer cake. This is seen in the illustration below.
Process
Pieces of the bench were firstly cut and sanded, followed by two to three layers of wood stand with 30s to 1minute of dry time in-between each other.
Assembling of the chair: For this project I decided to try using nails and wood glue to fully assemble the bench
About the mechanism that I have created — the bag holder pushed out once user sits on the seat and retracts when leaving. This is done by ball bearings and springs. This feature is to serve as a reminder to customers to not leave their belongings behind.
The addition of a tray which acts as a spacing, giving each user their individual space, and also a way to minimise the amount of interactions so as to achieve the touch and go experience. This tray also acts as a useable space for the owners to add dustbins, small pot of plants or magazine racks.
Final assembly of the veneer seats, armrest and metal support.
