Recycling at Cleveland State University

As of 2017, at Cleveland State University (CSU) only 15% of waste was being recycled. As a human centered design project, my team and I were tasked with researching the problem, proposing solutions for a design intervention, prototyping our solutions, and testing them.

To do this we asked ourselves the question:

Going forward into the project we decided that a website redesign would be the least effective tactic, so we took off that deliverable in order to develop some of our other solutions more. We created prototypes for each solution and tested their effectiveness and made adjustments as necessary.
Educational Video
This video would be utilized in the ASC 101 lecture, on the schools social media pages, and on screens in the student center. They would serve to inform people why they should recycle and how they can recycle on campus
ASC 101 lecture

Intro to University Life, or ASC 101, is a mandatory class that all freshman have to take their first semester at CSU. It features some guest speakers from different departments on campus and seeks to make students aware of the resources available to them.

We created a lecture for these new student in order to inform these new students, who have not yet developed habits on campus, how to recycle on and off campus.

In addition to the lecture, students would participate in a card sorting activity and receive a small handout with information on recycling and stickers.
At the end of the course we were asked what would we do if we were to continue the project. Although we had already done some testing, we recommended that more testing would be needed prior to large scale implementation. We also recommended extending the campaign to incorporate more deliverables, thus reaching more individuals and creating a more cohesive campaign.
