At 3,920m (12,990 ft), Lake Karakul is a salt lake resulting of a crater formed by a meteor. The small village bearing the same name is now home of a few families of Kirghiz people who settle there mostly in summer time. But back in the time of USSR the place was home of a gulag which, despite the inherent beauty of the place, must have been hell on earth considering the climatic conditions of the place, even during summer...
