TREES & TALES
Exhibit Design
March - April, 2017

Create an exhibit to inform, inspire, engage and connect people with the tree.
Golden Shower Tree | Amaltas | Cassia Fistula | Indian Laburnum
Trees have lot of memories with one’s childhood. I was lucky to have grown up among a lush green environment with nature all around. Golden shower has stuck with me since then until I moved to Mumbai and lost all connection with trees. I did not know the name of this tree. All I had in my memory was the bright colour, the shape of the flower and the feel of the bunches hanging and streets all yellow. Here was a chance to try to know the one tree of which I have had the strongest memory and an opportunity to reconnect.

SECONDARY RESEARCH

GRAPHIC PANEL

A handwritten compilation of the information gathered about the tree through visual elements, typography to enable flow of information.
Panel size : 3ft x 6ft

COLLATERAL

Creating a graphic collateral for the exhibit comprising of the names of the trees in various languages and stories associated with the names.

FORM EXPLORATIONS

Exploring forms of the tree, abstraction of the tree to arrive at concepts for the final installation.

CONCEPT SKETCHES

Based on the form explorations I tried to come up with concepts that talk about the aspects of the tree such that people especially youth can connect and inspire from it.

ROUGH CONCEPT MODEL
1. LIFE SIZE FLOWER
This includes people moving around the flowers to know the stories of the tree and to interact with the flower.

2. PLUCKING OF FLOWERS
This concept is more interactive where people come and pluck flowers with good luck wishes on it and see the change of the tree from flowering stage to that just with leaves.

3. 3D PROJECTION
Depicting the various seasonal changes of the tree through projection on the body of the tree inside an enclosed space.

4. FINAL CONCEPT : ENLIGHTENMENT
I decided on a curved path to have as a journey of my tree. The concept of Enlightenment was very true and pure that needed to be felt and brought to everyone’s notice for the tree is much more than its colour and beauty. I decided to do this in a dark covered enironment to do justice to the journey from dark (ignorance) to enlightenment.

    ACAD Drawings of the exhibit

MAKING - STRUCTURE
Constructing the curved panel, installing on site and painting the panel

MAKING - FLOWERS

INTERACTIVE WALL

I created a wall with a line drawing of the tree wherein people have to put their feelings about the tree or any memories they have with the tree to be shared with people. The purpose of this wall was to show everyone that the tree has the capacity to touch hearts and much more.

FINAL JOURNEY
Journey from darkness to enlightenment through self reflection as is the nature of the tree and its flowers.

GIVEAWAY - GOOD LUCK CHARM

Since the flowers are considered good luck in many parts of the world I decided to have them preserved and to be given as give away for good luck.

Don't forget to appreciate and leave your feedback! Thank you.
