The Dancing Girl
By: Sophia Sahr
Project: Human figure/movement
Medium: colored pencil

Describe: This piece incorporates the colors orange, pink, purple, brown, and black. The figure is a woman dancing with arms outstretched. A light gray shadow is below her. Her black hair follows her as she twirls, also causing her skirt to move. She has brown skin. She looks almost happy. The attempted light source is from above.

Analyze: This piece uses movement as a principle of design. This is because the character in question is dancing. The movement of limbs produces movement. Proportion is used because of the human proportions. I attempted to make the human proportional so it is used there. There is also harmony because I feel as if the colors work together. Many of them are warm colors and I tried to make them work together. This color scheme adds harmony to the piece and draws it all together.

Interpretation: This piece is based off of Inidian culture. I tried to echo this in the dancing movement, in the color of her skin. In the colors of her clothes, in the color of her hair, and in the design of the clothes. This piece took from Indian culture to fulfill the culture requirement. This piece also took the pose from multiple parts of multiple references. I did not use just one reference for the pose so I wouldn’t copy.

Judgement: I feel like I ruined this piece. I really liked it before I added the colored pencil. I do not like it now. I wish I hadn’t added colored pencil because it sucks. I need to improve with colored pencils. If I were to redo it I would do it in pencil.
