CEMETERY
These images comprise multiple stages of a master planning thesis that sought to document and represent the memories embedded in a cemetery, ultimately seeking design solutions that connect it to the neighborhood as a beautiful public park. During the stage of “GRAVESTONE,” I went into the cemetery and traced over headstones and found objects with charcoal, capturing the engravings and textures of aged concrete onto trace paper. These drawings were then scanned and superimposed over plan drawings — as in “CEMETERY” for instance — to embed quite literally the memories and names of previous neighborhood residents in the design. This cemetery project was really the first time that I directly engaged this concept of memory in my work. I was also interested in this neighborhood — what it had been, what it was, and what it was becoming.
