Carving Project
Fall 2017 - Wood I

Assignment:  Explore wood carving by creating a 3D mask. With a partner, determine a theme and then decide upon two polar concepts to tackle.

Our connecting theme was a masquerade mask. My partner's mask focused more on a soft, organic texture, while mine contains more facets and linear shapes.

We maintained a consistent mask shape by creating a template with measurements for the width, length, and height.
The most difficult part in constructing this mask was attaching the 'wisps'. I achieved a secure connection with a dowel joint.
I chose this faceted surface in order to maintain the integrity of handcraft and presence it has in woodcarving.
