Federschwert V4

The Project
The project is about designing a package for Federschwert V4, a training longsword for Historical European Martial Art (HEMA) practitioners. The original training sword was made from Blackfencer, and it didn’t have any noticable package. Instead, it came with very rudimentary cardboard box with some bubble wraps inside.

In order to reduce waste and increase value of the product, a new package is needed. Such package should not only show the essential details and information of the product, but also it should be functional to be reusable after the product is unpacked.

Currently, there’s no retailers selling this product, as it’s sold purely online. However, with the increase interest in HEMA, sword shops start to emerge from places to places. As a result, a good package that’s suitable for retail selling is needed.

RESTRICTIONS: Design a package for a product that is reusable by itself.

Federschwert
Federschwert means Feather Sword in German, and it was a word used for centuries to describe a specific type of training longsword. Around 5 centuries ago, a specific type of German training longswords were made blunt with less mass on the blade to make them hit as soft as possible and more mass near the hilt to compensate for the overall weight and center of gravity. Because those swords felt pretty light compared to their massive size, they were called Feather Swords, hence their name Federschwert.

Today, with advancement in material, technology, and productivity, legitimate training swords are made in either metal like old ones or in synthetic materials, which is what this product from Blackfencer is made out of. Synthetic materials are basically plastic but they are no where near fragile, some of them would even beat their metal counterparts in term of durability.

Synthetic training swords hit much softer than metal training swords, but they are usually too smooth to simulate binding techniques. Hence, synthetic swords are mainly used by beginners in HEMA and they are usually marketed on the lower-end as cheap wasters.

The Package
For this package, I’m aiming to have all the important information of the product labled for future possible sales in retail stores as well as turning the package itself into a functional piece so people won’t throw it away after they've opened the package.

I added the sword’s length, width, thickness, weight, center gravity, and stiffness on the surface as they are the most important information for HEMA practitioners. On the inside of the package, a cutting pattern graph for practice as well as hanging hooks & stickers are added so that people can hang the piece up on the wall and practice cuttings according to the graph. The package would also act as a hanger for the sword for better storages.
